Gene Hackman

Eugene Allen Hackman was born on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California. He had a difficult childhood — his father abandoned the family when Gene was 13, and he eventually dropped out of school and joined the United States Marine Corps. After his service, he pursued acting, studying at the Pasadena Playhouse where he was famously voted 'least likely to succeed.' He struggled for years before his breakthrough in Bonnie and Clyde (1967). His performance as Detective Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle in The French Connection (1971) won him the Academy Award for Best Actor and established him as one of Hollywood's premier talents. He went on to deliver iconic performances across five decades, winning a second Oscar for Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992). He retired from acting in 2004 and spent his later years writing Western novels with his wife Betsy.

Gene Hackman is widely considered one of the greatest actors in American film history.
