Udit Narayan Jha was born on December 1, 1955, in Biraul, a village in Bihar, India. He grew up in poverty in a musical family and trained in Maithili and Nepali folk music before pursuing classical training. He moved to Mumbai in the late 1970s to pursue a career in Bollywood playback singing. After early struggles, he broke through in the 1980s and became one of the defining voices of 1990s Bollywood — the golden era of Hindi cinema. His voice graced the soundtracks of iconic films including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and hundreds more. He has sung over 30,000 songs in multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Nepali.
