Udit Narayan

Udit Narayan Jha was born on December 1, 1955, in Biraul, a village in Bihar, India. He grew up in poverty in a musical family and trained in Maithili and Nepali folk music before pursuing classical training. He moved to Mumbai in the late 1970s to pursue a career in Bollywood playback singing. After early struggles, he broke through in the 1980s and became one of the defining voices of 1990s Bollywood — the golden era of Hindi cinema. His voice graced the soundtracks of iconic films including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and hundreds more. He has sung over 30,000 songs in multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Nepali.

Udit Narayan's voice is synonymous with 1990s Bollywood — the most beloved era in Hindi cinema history. His ability to express romance, longing, and joy with effortless authenticity made him the first choice for virtually every major Bollywood hero of the decade. He received the Padma Shri in 2009 in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to Indian music. He remains one of the most beloved and prolific singers in the history of Indian cinema.
